Ear infections are quite common in children. Nearly half of all children will have an ear infection by the age of 1 year old. They can be painful and present with a fever, cold and irritability. It can become a chronic condition for some children that can result in hearing, speech and developmental issues. Often, antibiotics are prescribed but aren’t effective enough in completely resolving the underlying cause of the chronic ear infections. Also, the repeated use of antibiotics can make the body resistant to its effects. As a result, fluid continues to accumulate within the ear causing further pain and pressure. Many frustrated parents opt for surgery as a last resort. The surgery involves inserting tubes in the ear to help drain the buildup of this fluid. Although this is effective for many, others have to repeat this surgery. Furthermore, this surgery requires general anesthesia and is quite expensive. Chiropractic is very effective in treating ear infections in children. An adjustment of the upper cervical region can help mobilize the fluid that builds up within the middle ear. The objective is to keep the upper cervical region adjusted to keep the fluid mobilized thus reducing pain and infection. By doing this, the child’s body will build antibodies to fight future infections.
